School Sponsorship Program, LGCCA/ASHOG
Due to the overwhelming number of children (and young adults) not in school on La Gonave Island, or, not in school consistently, LGCCA & ASHOG are relaunching our School Sponsorship Program. It costs $15 USD (currently about $19 CAD) per month per child for school. School runs for 10 months of the year but the remaining paid 2 months pays for the school uniform.

We will be adding to this Board of Students as time permits, if there is a child you see without a sponsor whom you would like to help please tell us.

ASHOG School, Anse a Galets

This wonderful school accepts as many children as possible even though they do not have sponsors. This unfortunately causes difficulties in that school supplies and educational materials are scarce and the teachers rarely get paid. The children need school sponsors in order to get a full and consistent education. The teachers do an amazing job with limited resources.
The school building itself needs finished – windows, the floors cemented, the roof completed and this will cost an estimated $1300 USD.

We gave them to the children and teachers during our medical clinic at Morne Augustin (we also gave a portion to the ASHOG School in Anse-a-Galets). There are 50+ children enrolled in school now, the school is supported by ASHOG, HaitiHelp and LGCCA. It costs $10 USD per month per child and we are looking for sponsors …. there are many more children who are still not in school. Education is the key to a good future for these children.
Morn Augustin Orphanage and School is about 55 minutes drive from the town of Anse-a-Galets up a rough road into the hills. It is quite remote. It has the capacity to house 44 children but due to financial pressures this number can fluctuate widely. When there is no money to feed and care for the children some of them are placed back into the community and unfortunately not in ideal situations. The children are aged between 4 and 15 years. They are orphaned or abandoned children.
The orphanage itself is a brick building with one room of bunk beds for boys and one room for girls. It is very cramped and basic. There is no kitchen. During times of adequate donations there are up to 44 children in residence with one cook and 2 ladies caring for them.
The pastor of the area, Pastor Eleuhode oversees the schooling of the children and there is a school next to the orphanage. Most of that building is badly damaged and cannot be used, the floor and roof being unsafe.
There is a rainwater tank but this is insufficient for demand so clean water is bought to give to the children. The food and water bills are very expensive and this causes huge problems for the children who then get moved out to survive as best they can in the community until the pastor has the funds to bring them back again. The damage this must do to their psychological health and sense of security is devastating but without adequate funding the pastor and ASHOG can only do their best.
There is no well at the orphanage. The island of La Gonave is generally more expensive than the mainland because food must be transported from the mainland and this makes providing food for the children a huge problem. Unfortunately there are no major charities such as World Vision on the island because these children really need a child sponsorship program in order to be fed and schooled adequately to grow up healthy and educated and able to live productive lives. The Haitian government does not provide any assistance for these children.
March 2013 Update
A very enjoyable visit to the Orphanage and school at Morne Augustin to see Pastor Elouhode and the children. Jean Rony Toussaint, Dieune Simonaire (ASHOG) and I spent some time with the children in class and were able to give them donated school supplies and a few items of clothing. The school still has almost no teaching materials, most lessons are written on a blackboard by the teacher. A few children had notebooks and pencils.
We gave lots of childrens multivitamins to the teachers so they can hand them out daily as the children arrive at school. They will only last 2 or 3 months so I will need to start collecting more now to take out there again this September. The younger children especially show signs of malnutrition and I was very sad to see 6 year old Naphca looking so thin and anaemic, worse than when I first met her one year ago. Naphca (on right) is seen here with her handicapped 8 year old sister Shellanda. The girls live with their mentally ill mother who cannot work to provide for them, they have lived in the Orphanage before and were doing well there but now there are no funds for them. They are always hungry.
